Throughout space there are large swirls of gas, dust and stars knows as galaxies. A typical galaxy contains around 100 billion stars and there are around 100 billion galaxies in the known universe. The Andromeda galaxy is about 2.4 million light years away and appears about 5 times the size of the full moon. It is visible to the naked eye under a very dark sky, however, long exposure imaging is required to see detail like the images here.
